The African Agricultural Markets Programme (AAMP) was launched by the COMESA Ministers of Agriculture at their 5th meeting in Mahe, Seychelles in March 2008. AAMP is one of the key programmes within the Comprehensive Africa Agricultural Development Programme (CAADP) Pillar 2.

Objectives: The AAMP aims to enhance regional capacity, policy dialogue, and coordination on staple food markets in eastern and southern Africa.

Activities: African Agricultural Markets Programme (AAMP) provides policymakers with up-to-date research results on staple food markets in eastern and southern Africa, as well as offering training courses in methods for analyzing agricultural markets.  The project has been implemented through a series of six events.  Five of the events consisted of a two-day policy seminar and a two-day training course on a topic related to staple crop marketing.  The sixth event was a conference at which journalists were given tools to understand and interpret trends in agricultural markets.

Geographic coverage: The AAMP initially covered seven countries in eastern and southern Africa, including both members and non-members of Comesa: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique.  In 2011, additional funding from Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) allowed the project to expand to cover Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Funding and administration: The project is funded by the Department of International Development (DfID) of the United Kingdom, with additional funding from AusAID.  It is managed by the World Bank and implemented by the Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa (ACTESA), a specialized agency of the Common Market of Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).   The analytical team consists of researchers from Michigan State University and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI).
